The first funders’ meeting of the CARTA program was held on 23 – 24 March, 2011 in Nairobi. In attendance were Dr. Jimmy Whitworth (Wellcome Trust) , Ms. Andrea Johnson ( Carnegie Corporation of New York) ; Ms. Corrie Conrad(Google.org) ; Professor Friday Okonofua ( Ford Foundation); and Kole Shettima ( MacArthur Foundation).  The groups also visited the 25 fellows who were in residence for the JAS 1 training.  Babatunde Adedokun recited the following poem in support of the CARTA concept:

What great idea is CARTA
Defining a new chapter
On the continent of Africa
Networking Africa’s best talents and researchers
Converting rookie lecturers into renowned scholars
Greenhorns to pastmasters
Realigning research on the continent on the right path
Ultimately changing the countries income per capita
As young researchers supplant the continents’ retiring teachers
Raising hope for the great continent of Africa
From Kenya to Rwanda
Nigeria
to Uganda
All hail the programme called CARTA
