CARTA will host the Joint Advanced Seminar 2 for the CARTA PhD fellows cohort 2 at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa from November 12 – December 6, 2012.  JAS II builds on the experiences of JAS I held in March 2012 in Nairobi, Kenya, where the fellows were exposed to presentations and field visits aimed at building their critical thinking, upgrading their technical skills and other core research competencies as well as essential concepts and seminal articles in their disciplines.  The fellows will learn data management and analysis techniques through introduction to software packages for qualitative and quantitative data management and analyses.

Fellows will have an opportunity to meet with their supervisors who will be taking their training workshop from November 19 – 23, 2012 at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa.  The workshop hopes to further develop doctoral supervisory skills amongst academics in CARTA participating universities.  During the workshop, supervisors will have an opportunity to meet and acquaint themselves, as advisors to CARTA PhD Fellows, with VCs of CARTA partner institutions as well as interact with some facilitators, their students and other fellows in the cohort.

Also planned at the time of the JAS II, is the first meeting of Vice Chancellors from CARTA institutions.  They will hold their meeting from November 19 – 20, 2012 at the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa.  The main objective of this meeting is to discuss research capacity strengthening in Africa using the CARTA model which will be presented.

Other expected outcome of the meeting is the identification of various modalities through which African partner institutions can enhance PhD training and offer an opportunity for both CARTA and the Vice Chancellors, to further discuss African tertiary intuitions leadership role on the continent.
