25 cohort 3 CARTA Fellows selected for the CARTA PhD Fellowships 2012/13. 2012 Annual CARTA Partners’ meeting was held from August 27th – 29th, 2012 at the Centre for Sustainable Development, University of Ibadan, Nigeria. All members were in attendance except the University of Dar es Salaam who could not be represented owing to last minute logistical constraints. CARTA Secretariat received a total of 43 nominations from CARTA institutions after they had vetted initial applicants. These were granted access to the CARTA website to undertake an online assignment - pre Joint Advanced Seminar Part 1 (Pre JAS 1) from June 15 – July 15, 2012. The assignment was in five parts, two of which lead to certification on plagiarism and ethics. The other three parts tested candidates’ level of critically reviewing of peer-reviewed articles, their ability to undertake numeracy tasks and an assignment on critical thinking. They submitted the certificates and work to CARTA Secretariat for grading. They also had submitted an application package with motivation essays which was also reviewed and graded. The results were presented to the Partners who helped in the selection process. A total of 25 fellows were selected comprising 11 males and 14 females. All the CARTA academic institutions had a fellow selected for the fellowship unlike in the previous selection for cohort 2, where two academic institutions did not have representation in the fellowship. Moi University and the University of Ibadan got four fellowships each followed by the universities of Malawi, Witwatersrand and Obafemi Awolowo with three each. Universities with two candidates each are University of Nairobi, Makerere and the National University of Rwanda. The University of Dar es Salaam and the Ifakara Health Institute got one fellowship each.
The 25 selected candidates will undertake online pre Joint Advanced Seminar Part 2 from October 1, 2012 – February 28, 2013 in preparation for the Joint Advanced Seminar 1 (JAS 1) to be held in March 2013 when the fellowship program will officially commence. The following is a full list of the selected fellows:
Three candidates were placed on the reserve list to take up position in case a candidate fails to take their fellowship among them, one from Ibadan to replace an Ibadan fellow in the event an Ibadan fellow fails to continue.
