6th African Institutions Initiative Directors Meeting – Northern Partners Focus.

Wellcome Trust convened a meeting of African Institutions Initiative (AII) Directors with a focus to Northern Partners at the Wellcome Trust, London, United Kingdom from June 26th – June 28th, 2012.  AII comprises a set of consortia members that includes CARTA.  Other members are One Health Initiative - African Research Consortium for Ecosystem and Population Health, One Medicine Africa-UK Research Capacity Development Partnership Programme for Infectious Diseases in Southern Africa (SACIDS consortium), Research Institute for Infectious Diseases of Poverty (IIDP), Southern Africa Consortium for Research Excellence (SACORE), Strengthening research capacity in environmental health (SNOWS), Training Health Researchers into Vocational Excellence in East Africa (THRiVE).  Each of the consortia operates independently and sets its own agenda. The main purpose of the meeting was to share and learn from the experiences of each consortia and the collaborations they have with their Northern Partners (NP).  CARTA was represented in the meeting by the Director Dr Alex Ezeh, who is also the Executive Director African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) and Professor Margaret Thorogood of the University of Warwick – a CARTA Northern Partner - who did a presentation on CARTA’s training courses dwelling on the CARTA’s experience in conducting PhD Joint Advanced Seminars (JAS) for CARTA fellows.
